"begin anywhere" -John Cage

An exhausted figure leans over a desk surrounded by ominous owls and cats.

For Those Who Create

Many of my clients are and have been people who would describe themselves as artists, intellectuals, people who  live through words or paint or bass lines. (The label "creatives" sounds like the worst kind of marketing language but it's what fit in the header.) I write and make music and, perhaps more to the point, I am an avid viewer and reader and listener. I'm a good audience, and I understand the importance of all of this.

Sometimes we talk about what is getting in the way of creative work. Sometimes it's just important for me to understand how the act of composing or sculpting or bowing a string shapes the inner life. When it feels important and appropriate, I encourage the making of things as an act of enrichment.

I should note that I'm not solely talking about working with accomplished artisans here. Long ago, a friend told me "it's good to have something you do with enthusiasm or even passion but are not great at," and I truly feel the significance of being someone who writes for an audience of one or hums unaccompanied suites in the car.
